About Portmanteaux

Portmanteaux is a daily word game about invention. Each day the game hands you a prompt and a pool of sixteen words, and your job is to fuse two or three of them into a brand-new word — a portmanteau — and then define it as though it had always existed. A blursday caught halfway between "blur" and "Thursday". A candlebrunch that nobody asked for. There is no right answer to find, because the game is won by convincing the other players, who vote for the words they like best.

There are two ways to play. The Daily Challenge gives everyone the same prompt, and at the end of the day the most-voted word is crowned Word of the Day and saved to the shared dictionary. Friend Games let you open a private room, share a code, and play several rounds in a row, with players taking turns supplying the prompt and the words. You can invite people you know, add AI rivals to fill out a room, or blend on your own with the Portman-tool.

It's made for anyone who enjoys words — writers, teachers, students, families, and groups of friends who want something quick to play together. A round takes a few minutes, there's nothing to install, and you can join a friend's room straight from a link.

Portmanteaux is built and maintained by J.M. Phillips. It's a small, independent project, and it is completely free to play — no subscriptions, no paywalls, and no ads.
