Terms & Privacy
Plain language, no fine print games. Version 2026-09-28, in effect September 28, 2026.
The short version. Portmanteaux is a free word game. Play fairly, keep it decent, and know that the words you invent are shown to other players. We ask for as little about you as we can, we don't sell it, and there are no ads.
Terms of Use
Agreeing to these terms
By creating an account or playing Portmanteaux, you agree to these terms. If you don't agree with them, please don't play. The game is operated under the name Portmanteaux.
Who can play
You need to be 13 or older to play. If the law where you live sets a higher age for agreeing to online services on your own — some countries in Europe set it at 14, 15 or 16 — you must meet that age instead. If you're younger than the age that applies to you, please play only with a parent or guardian's permission.
Your account
You can play the Daily Challenge without an account as a guest, though guest play is limited. With an account, keep your sign-in details to yourself, and remember that you're responsible for what happens under it.
Playing fairly
Play the game as a person, by hand. Don't use bots or scripts, don't scrape or copy the game's word banks, don't impersonate another player, and don't harass anyone in chat.
The words you invent
What you write is yours. By submitting a word, a definition or a message, you give us permission to show it in the game, in the shared dictionary, and in Word of the Day and contest features, credited to your display name. Only submit things you have the right to share, and nothing unlawful, hateful, threatening, or sexually explicit.
Content we remove
We may remove any word, prompt or message, and suspend or close any account, that breaks these terms or that we judge harmful to other players. This is the rule we point to when something is taken down.
Free to play, and changes
Portmanteaux is free. There are no subscriptions, no in-app purchases and no ads. Features may be added, changed or retired at any time.
Availability and liability
The game is provided as it is. We work to keep it running, but we can't promise it will always be available or free of errors, and we're not liable for indirect losses. Nothing here limits rights you have under your local consumer law.
Ending your account
You can delete your account at any time from Profile & Settings. We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms.
Changes to these terms
If these terms change, we'll ask you to accept the new version the next time you sign in. The version and its date are always shown at the top of this page.
Questions about these terms
Send them through the Contact page and they'll reach the person who builds Portmanteaux.
Privacy Note
The short version
We collect as little about you as we can get away with: your email address, your display name, and what you do in the game. We don't sell it, we don't run ads, and we don't use advertising trackers.
What we collect
Your email address, which is how you sign in and how a password reset reaches you. Your display name. What you do in the game: the words and definitions you submit, your votes, chat messages, friend groups, contest entries and streaks. Basic technical information needed to run the service and keep it fair, including an anonymised hash of your network address, which is used to limit guest play and automated traffic.
Why we collect it
To run the game and show your words to the people you're playing with, to keep the shared dictionary and Word of the Day working, to keep play fair, and to stop abuse.
Who can see it
Your display name, the words you submit, your chat messages, your contest entries and any Word of the Day credit are visible to other players. Your email address is not shown to other players. Your data is held with the hosting provider that runs the app, and is never sold or rented to anyone.
Playing as a guest
If you play without an account, your play is recorded against a token stored in your browser and an anonymised hash of your network address, not against an account. Guest play is limited.
Children
Portmanteaux is for players 13 and older, or older where local law requires it. We don't knowingly collect information from children below that age. If you believe a child has played, get in touch and we'll remove it.
Deleting your account
Deleting your account removes your account record and your saved words. Words, definitions, messages and credits you already shared with other players stay in the game, because they're part of games other people played — but your display name and email address are replaced with an anonymous label, so nothing in them points back to you. Friend groups you owned are removed, and invitations waiting on you are cleared.
Your choices
You can change your display name whenever you like, and delete your account whenever you like, from Profile & Settings.
